A while back, the Tri Deltas sponsored Fat Talk Free Week. I watched the video they put out. I discussed the ideas with Missy. I managed to go a whole week without dissing myself for being a great, big fatass.
Then?
Then I forgot all about it. I went back to ragging on myself and my body. I went back to believing the skinny hype – thinner is better. Fat is ugly. Fat is a sign of laziness and gluttony. Oh yes, kids, I believed those things, even though I know better. Recently, though, a friend related that one of the reasons she believes she freaks out about weight is because her mother was constantly trashing herself over her weight.
Oh. Snap.
You mean these things I’m saying about me are getting into Lenna and Tricia’s brains? These things I’m saying about me are reinforcing the hugely powerful message the media is already pounding into their little heads? These things I’m saying about me are going to become things they say about themselves?
No. Unacceptable. That is completely fucking unacceptable. And so I’ve decided to make Fat Talk Free Week something that goes on daily in this household. I’ve decided that we’re going to start talking about healthy lifestyles and bodies that work the way God intended, and we’re going to stop talking about size or shape or weight.
And I’m watching this video as often as it takes to keep my shit together. FOR MY DAUGHTERS.
