Recently, someone told Bill he’d “changed”. She flung it at him like an insult, but from where I sit, it’s a pretty lame insult. He’s gotten married, acquired three kids and moved twice since the last time they’ve spent any significant time hanging out. He’s changed? Uh, DUH. He had to change. He can’t exactly be the freewheeling single guy anymore. He has a wife and kids to consider.
What’s funny to me, though, is how it seems so many people use “YOU’VE CHANGED!!” as an insult. We’re living organisms, kids. If we’re not changing, we’re dead. So I don’t much see it as an insult to notice that a living thing is doing what it’s supposed to do.
But I’ve also noticed how it’s very rare that people note a change, unless it impacts them negatively. You don’t want to cater to my every wish and whim anymore? YOU’VE CHANGED!! You prefer to put your wife and kids first? YOU’VE CHANGED!! You’re not going to go along with everything I say anymore? YOU’VE CHANGED!! You refuse to enable my self-created drama? YOU’VE CHANGED!!
Yeah, Bill’s changed. I, for one, am damn glad of it.
Steph is participating in x365 and thinks you should, too.
