TWoP, what has happened to you?

by Steph on August 5, 2008

In days gone by, I looked to TWoP for hilarious recaps of shows I loved…and loved to hate. (Charmed would be a prime example of the latter.) For some reason, though, I’d sort of forgotten about TWoP. I guess forgotten is the wrong word since it was more that I found other things to do online.

Recently, though, I’ve started going through the archives to re-read (in some cases, re-re-read which is different than re-re-respect) old recaps. (Again, Charmed. Stop laughing.) I also went to read recaps of new shows. Imagine my surprise when I find the garbage they’re calling “weecaps”.

Where is the sardonic commentary on the show’s exposition? Where are the mocking jabs about ridiculous plots? Where are the calls for continuity checks? WHERE IS THE SNARK?

I’ll tell you where it’s not – in the weecaps, which I’ll now dub weecraps. In reading the latest weecrap from “My Name Is Earl”, I actually goggled (which is different than Googling, but that’s another post) at how terrible the writing was and how badly the episode had been recapped. I’m not even sure how to describe it really.

Okay. Probably you know someone who cannot tell a joke properly. Like they’re always screwing up the punchline or the timing or something, right? Try as they might, they just cannot tell the joke? Okay, imagine someone like that person telling trying to tell a funny story about someone telling a really good joke, and then, you’ll get an idea of what that weecrap was like.

I surfed through some of the other weecraps, and yeah. All the same. Wing Chun, Sars, Glark? I understand why you left. I weep, but I understand. (Also? Sorry about being so late to this particular party. Maybe I shouldn’t abandon websites for months on end.)

I’m right there with you. I used to post on their boards and catch up on The Office recaps…but I think it changed owners or something and now it really sucks. Quite a few people are ticked about it.

i have no idea what you’re talking about with the re-cap, weecrap thing…

BUT, i do know people who can’t tell jokes. like you say – for some reason, the joke is just bad. not sure if it’s timing or the way they speak the words or gestures… but yeah. i get that.

(btw, my husband is one of those shitty joke-tellers. i have mentioned in the past that i did *not* marry him for his sense of humor…)

Jaci – Yeah, Bravo/NBC bought them out last year, and it’s gone to hell since. :/

MoFM – You should so go read televisionwithoutpity.com, but make sure it’s old shit, not the new “weecaps” garbage. If you watched Angel or Buffy or Charmed, those recaps are awesome.

I loved TWoP. I used to read my Buffy recaps there every week.

Wing Chun is gone???? She was the best.

Deb – Wing Chun, Sars, Glark, Miss Alli – all gone. And nearly a year to the day after the NBCBravo buyout. Go figure.

Steph:

Yes, but Wing Chun is now using her real name and blogging here: http://www.taraariano.com/! It’s not TWoP, but it’s something!

I miss all those guys too, but some of the recaps aren’t total crap (yet) — I still read the ones for Project Runway, Big Brother and a couple of others, and they’re pretty snarky. Not like it was in the good ol’ days, though, by a long shot. Boo!

Deb – Thank you for that link. YAY!

Jane – Some of the stuff over there is still good, but there was always a reason they didn’t do sitcoms, be it in recap or weecrap. Now that Bravo owns that shit, TWoP is sort of not the TWoP it used to be…then again, I bet everyone said the same stuff when they went from MBTV to TWoP, too.

TWoP about five years ago was awesome. I read recaps of shows I’d watched. Then something happened w/ the forums. Some big site featured them or something and it was flooded with morons who didn’t get TWoP. Then instead of educating them, a la the old days, TWoP went down to their level. I quit reading. Then NBC or something bought them and that was it.

Did you read when it was Mighty Big TV?

BTW: My fave recapper was Aaron from Pittsburgh who used to recap the HBO shows, smoked and loved him some Claire on SFU.

Eden – I remember the fabulous days of TWoP. God, I remember deciding whether or not shows were worth my time based on whether or not TWoP did recaps. Jacob? Forever my favorite, God love his black, tarry soul.
