Why Bill should listen to me about sports.

July 15th, 2008 by Steph · 18 Comments · Sports

So, before this baseball season began, I picked my favorite player. Going with my my usual method, I picked based on how I felt about the player, rather than any actual sports knowledge. This year, I picked Josh Hamilton.

Josh Hamilton, the guy who hit 28 home runs in the first round of last night’s Home Run Derby. TWENTY-EIGHT. He then went on to lose the derby to some smarmy bastard because the first two rounds didn’t count, but whatevs. The way they run the derby is lame if you ask me…wipe the slate clean for the last round, my ass.

Okay, if that wasn’t impressive, just take a look at his stats. The cat is batting .310 - according to Bill, this is pretty good. (I don’t know how doing your job 1/3 of the time is good, but Bill tells me I don’t really “get” baseball. Which is true.) Josh has hit 21 home runs so far this season. He has 95 RBIs so far…I could keep going, but basically what I’m saying is that Josh Hamilton is pimp shit, yo.

You still don’t care about Josh Hamilton, do you? Well, how ’bout this? Just a few years ago, Josh Hamilton was a drug addict. He’d gone from the #1 draft pick in 1999 to a junkie walking mindlessly down the middle of a highway to get to his dealer’s house. Then, he got clean and got serious about playing baseball. I’m not doing Josh’s story justice, so I’ll just share a link so you can have it in his words.

He’s your favorite player now, isn’t he? Yeah. I know.

Okay, I’m not into sports AT ALL, but on the rare occasion I take an interest, I pick the players I like based on their uniforms and how cute they are. I know… how girlie of me.

d - I’ve picked most of my players that way. But with Josh Hamilton, I happened to read a story about him in “Sports Illustrated”, and that was it. I’m a Hamilton fan for life.

Baseball is the one with the guys in capri pants and they smack the little ball with the stick right?

You got me with the drug addict story.

Those human interest stories get me every time. And they’re how I pick my favorite sports guys.

Down and out? Made an against all odds comeback? Then I’m rooting for you.

Even though I know NOTHING about sports.

I weep. Our national pastime has been reduced to capri pants and the butts they contain. Babe Ruth is rolling over in his grave. Of course he was laying on a hot dog.

Missy - Yup, that’s the one. Hee.

Deb - Since this is the way I pick sports guys, too, I will not cast stones.

Bill - Why are you talking about candy bars? Oh. Wait. That’s a *Baby Ruth. My bad.

Weep Weep Weep. Had Abner Doubleday known it would be like this he would have kept his idea to himself.

i don’t follow baseball at all, but kudos to Mr. Hamilton for getting his shit together.

    that is all.

Bill - Okay, so why did they keep talking about Milton Bradley? I mean, what does the guy who invented Monopoly have to do with baseball?

MoFM - I’m not a baseball fan, either. But Josh Hamilton could maybe make me change my mind.

For the same reason an actor was in the Home Run Derby last night.

Bill - The fact that you drug out some obscure mofo who no one but you and other movie geeks has heard of just proves your desperation to not be a giant dork. It’s too bad that nothing can save you from dorkdom.

Missy–Technically they’re not really capri pants; they’re more like stirrup pants. LOL

Steph– Josh Hamilton is a good story. The whole winner then loser, then winner is always good. The only better story is when they become a loser again because addiction never goes away.

Bill–d probably thinks I’m a citizen of that dork…uh…kingdom, being that I know Abner Doubleday was the inventor of baseball.

Whoot! I got Jim to post! :)

Jim - Josh isn’t going back. It’s a God thing. :solemn nod:

d - The trick is getting him to come back and do that again.

Most of the pants today are tight elastic around the ankle. Some are traditionalists and have the old school pants that are just below knee length, and then have socks up to the knee with stirrup socks up to the knee as well. The point being, they are baseball pants. The stirrups come from the socks not the pants.

Thanks Jim, for knowing who Doubleday is. I was feeling like I was teaching Helen Keller sign language here trying to say anything about baseball.

Bill - Look here, dork, if you want to educate us about baseball, start your own blog. :P

My favorite thing about baseball is when guys get mad and kick dirt at each other. That’s like two bikers getting in a fight and throwing dead leaves.
My husband shakes his head in sorrow at my pathetic excuse for baseball knowledge, too.

  • 18 Steph // Jul 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

Lindsey - Or when the managers get all mad and pick up the bases? WTF is that? Other than a way to make me LOL, I mean.
