The contest.

June 12th, 2008 by Steph · 23 Comments · Contests

You know how some things are guaranteed to make other things happen? Like when you light a smoke, your waitress is for sure going to bring your food? Or when you wash your car, you’re for sure getting some bangin’ thunderstorms? Or if you smoke a little dope one weekend, your job picks the next Monday to randomly drug test you? (Okay, that last one has never actually happened to me. But mostly because I’m a ‘fraidy-cat who won’t smoke dope anymore.)

I have something new to add to the list. When you want to rename your blog based on your current location, your husband will get prospects in a completely different location. Yes, kids, there is at least one potential job that looks fairly promising - in a town about 90 miles from here.

Now most people would think this means I’m calling off the contest…well, most people who don’t know me. Those people would be wrong. All this does is change the parameters a little. Let’s skip this whole location-based idea altogether. Let’s go with naming this sucker something about me and my life that’s not subject to change. Like I’m married to Bill. I have three kids. And all the other little factoids that y’all already know about me. The rest of the rules are the same - submit via the comments here, not via e-mail or LJ or whatever other method your creative little minds come up with. I’ll pick on 06/16…yaddayaddayadda.

Ready, set, go!

You've got something to say? Great. That goes here. First time commenters have to go through the moderation process, but after that, you're all set. Unless you're a complete buttface.

So, 90 miles…where is this job? Does it sound pretty good?

  • 2 d // Jun 12, 2008 at 10:41 am

Congrats on the job prospects for Mr. Bill.

As far as the blog name goes, I got nothing. My only attempt was what I posted and that’s about as far as my creativity will go…and I had to steal the Greek idea from Noel. So…yeah.

First, fingers crossed for the job. I’d cross my legs, too, but let’s be real, what good would that do?

Second, my vote is to leave it as the Stephford Diaries, with the idea that the point of your blog is “keeping it real”. No one’s life is perfect, no neighborhood/burg/village is as perfect as its inhabitants would like you to believe. The idea of “Stepford” doesn’t have to be an actual location, just a state of mind that I think exists to a certain degree everywhere — our way of life is best because *we chose it, so ifyou dont’ get it, there’s something wrong with you, you know? I like the undercurrent of sarcasm of the title. :-D But I’ll read even if you call it something lame like Mommy2My3Dolls. ::cackle::

    I’m going with “Stephopia.”

It’s everywhere and nowhere at all once.

And you can even mean “Stephopia” ironically.

I did tell you about my writer’s block, didn’t I?

First dude. Major juju push for Bill. Much candles will be lit and many prayers said.

Second…uhhhhhhhhh. What if you just switched it to “The Diva Diaries”? Beacause fuh reals. Thats so you. Or of course you could go with “The hermit’s roadshow.” but that only works as long as you guys are on the move which will hopefully be shortlived.

Of course you could always go with a simple “Stephteph”. Yeah it sounds like you’re the Egyptian Queen of the interwebs but you’ll forever be Stephteph to me dude.

Plus I’m with Robbi. You call it something like that, I’ll keep reading but I’ll have to pick my ass off the floor from LMAOing.

Jane - It’s a gig with the state, so yeah, probably decent. Not the greatest money ever, but the benefits will be good.

d - I’m not getting too hyped up about it yet - he’s had solid prospects before that didn’t pan out.

Robbi - But I’m feeling this need for change. Although, you make a good point…

Deb - Hmm. This one might require some deeeep thinking.

Missalicious - Stephteph. Hee. It always cracks me up.

For the record, Mommy2My3Dolls? I actually considered it. No, really. This is how desperate I am.

    “Musings of a Midwest Maharani”

That’s all I’ve got. Plus, I just spotted a bill that was due on the 6th, dammit. School’s out at 10:15am for the summer, my house is a mess, and my kids woke me up at 6:15am. Today can suck it. But I still love you, Steph. I can hold on to that.

  • 8 Steph // Jun 12, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Lindsey - Have I told you lately that I love you like I had your babies? If not, consider it said.

Still Matrienna (steph, bill, matt, tricia, lenna) a combo of pieces of all of your names so that no matter where you live, where you move to (if it comes to that) you’re still the same people! sorry if it sounds corny, but those that know you know it’s still the same old you, those that don’t might be intrigued by the name-good luck in your contest Steph, enjoyed reading your blog!

i think putting terms like “diva” and “musings” and having “mom”, “mommy”, or “mama” anywhere in your blogname is boring and has already been done. like, 87,346,331 times. (just call me Ms. Hypo Crite.)

being of no help whatsoever, i’m going to say that i think you should stick with Stephford. however, if you’re dying for a change, i do like the idea of Stephtopia, and Stephteph is cute.

:::being the anal nitpicky one, aka the one unable to ever quit beating a dead horse::: I know you want to continue to build a readership, for the point of building a readership, but also for the income it generates from the ads and so on, so from a strictly financial standpoint (ignoring all my blather about Stephford being anywhere you want it to be) it makes sense to leave it. Just picking some more, what about changing the *name do you feel would satisfy your need for change? It’s still quintessentially the same blog; right? It’s like changing the name from Starbucks to BillyBob’s Brew — the reason people come is for the coffee, not the name or what they perceive to necessarily be the relevance thereof.

:::avoids eye contact and runs in a zig zag pattern::::

I still like Stephdysseus. Steph’s Oddyssey (sp?). But I’m a dork. LOL.
    Stephtacular?
Stephtropolis? Cause wherever you are, you’re still in Stephtropolis?

Stephtropolis - Always in the midst of it all.
So it’s both a play on being in the Midwest, and also being in the middle of everything you blog about.

There’s always De Trop Diva - a little more than is appropriate. LLOL. Or maybe Stephernumerary.

    And yaaay for job vibes.

MoFM - Hence the birth of this here contest. My teeny little brain is just chockful of cliches.

Robbi - You make a fine point, but what the hell kind of contest should I have instead? Also, on a financial tip, I’m the registrant on record for http:/thestephforddiaries.com. So, yeah. Probably I should stick to this. Maybe a new tagline?

Noel - Stephscalade? With a big honkin’ Escalade as the header? I’m kind of thinkign Robbi is right on this - changing it now means changing a bunch of shit, not to mention nearly all links to here list it as “The Stephford Diaries.” So, probably I should amend to a new tagline.

  • 14 Noel // Jun 12, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Stephscalade. ::cackle:: I always loved that.

  • 15 Robbi // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:38 am

::doing Snoopy dance that you’re not kicking my butt cheeks for being a stubborn ass:::

I’m thinking of contests. But to be a stubborn ass again, I personally would read your blog and not care a whit about contests. I never win those damn things, anyway, and as you know it’s all about me, me, me. :-D But for people who do win … I don’t know, let’s see. Well. I got nothing. Ree is giving away freakin’ Zunes. How you going to compete with *that shit? lol. And speaking from someone who is trying to win said Zune, I’m doing it because I want a Zune, not because I give a rat’s ass about the blog. You know? To beat the poor, dead horse, I think the people who read this blog read it becuase they love you and they think what you write is a great read, or for people who don’t know you personally, they think what you write is worth reading every day, and that’s that. I think your schtick that you keep searching for is *you, my friend.

But if you want to do a contest that I win? I’m all about that, of course. :-D

  • 16 Robbi // Jun 13, 2008 at 12:47 am

It’s me. Again. LOL. I’m not sure why this is sticking in my head and thought process so much today. I want to say that if I did not know you, if I stumbled across your blog like some others I read by following links in comments and so on, that I’d stick around and read solely because I like how you write, I love the 365 thing, and so on. Sometimes you make me think, sometimes you make me laugh, sometimes you make me just go, “huh,” and sometimes what you write strikes some weird melancholy, sad, happy, whatever chord about something in my life that has absolutely nothing to do with what you just wrote, but just reminds me. I think you overthink this thing, and just need to write it and let it be, becuase it’s good. It really is.

And with that, I’ll quit preaching. I promise. :-D

    You dork. :::shin kick:::

  • 17 Steph // Jun 13, 2008 at 7:23 am

Noel - Me too. If we win the lottery, I’m buying one, then spending a ton of money for someone to make it run on air or something.

Robbi - Your comments have sparked today’s post. So, thank you.

  • 18 kendra // Jun 13, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Yep, I understand all of that. I have to change the name of my daughter’s name on the blog, cuz she has hit puberty, so “Pre-puberty” doesn’t fit. Okay, all of that to say that I get it.

  • 19 Steph // Jun 13, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Kendra - Maybe that should be my contest - Rename PP for Working Mom.

  • 20 Eden // Jun 13, 2008 at 10:38 pm

As a fellow Stephanie, I think you need to base it on your name. How, I have no idea.

  • 21 Steph // Jun 14, 2008 at 1:31 am

Eden - This is why I love The Stephford Diaries so much. My name is in there without it being something blatant like “All About Steph, All the Time!!”

  • 22 Jane // Jun 15, 2008 at 2:18 am

What Robbi said. Both times. :D

  • 23 Steph // Jun 15, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Jane - Hey. Look. I’m calling you later. You cool with that?
