Life

So, with Christmas fast approaching…

…I’ve decided to start making goodies. Oh, I know — I have no hope of seeing these suckers last more than a couple of days, but a girl can dream, right? Plus, the smell of baked goods is never a bad thing. Oh, I suppose I could use candles, but well, candles don’t taste that great. Or so I’ve heard.

At any rate, since I’m about to start whipping up my own seasonal treats (along with some year-round faves), I was wondering what y’all’s your traditions were? Do you have any treats that are special to this time of year? Stuff you just plain refuse to make until that holiday spirit gives you a big kick of joy-to-the-world-and-gimme-a-cookie-already?

For us, Rice Krispie treats are pretty much a Christmastime thing. I have no idea why, but that’s just how it is. Fudge is another thing that’s saved for this time of year. (Make mine without nuts, please. It’s a texture thing.) I’ll be making those by the truckload, I’m sure. But I also plan on making snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, no-bake cookies, and chocolate peanut butter chip cookies. Clearly, we’re not big on stuff that requires a plate and fork around here…or anything that might even remotely resemble a healthy choice. (You’ll note the lack of oatmeal raisin cookies on that list, I think.)

So, your turn. (Fair warning - I might steal your really fabulous ideas, people. Srsly. Also? I have ideas about some non-sweet treats, but I could really use your ideas in that department. Lil Smokies in BBQ sauce isn’t a dish that says “Merry Christmas” all that well, in my never-humble opinion.)

  1. Thanks for visiting and your sweet comments!! I don’t know diddly about codes, html, css or anything. The amazing judith shakespeare did it for me :-)
Now, I make these pantry cookies which are to die for. They’re the bestest cookies evah!
Then we do Texas Trail Mix, spiced pretzels, pretzelos, and that’s just for gifts :-) LOL! You’re fun, ya know that.

  2. Rachel - I try.

And recipes! I need recipes! You can’t tell me a cookie is the best cookie evah, and then not give me a recipe. It’s mean or something. :D

  3. Pretty much everything I make at the holidays is the ONLY time I make them.

I have about a dozen different cookie recipes to pull from and I just pick and choose what to make.

Like cannolis aren’t big here amongst the people I make plates for, so I don’t make them because they’re a bitch and half.

This year I’m making 7up cake, spiced chocolate balls with lemon icing, baklava, fudge (with nuts), sugar cookies, and anise cookies.

Even if I add stuff recipes, these 6 never change.

  4. Essential Sweets - Christmas Spice Palmiers, Orange Dream Cookies, Black Forrest Cake, snickerdoodles — usually fudge but I won’t have time to make it this year (peanut butter, chocolate and mint chocolate usually).

Essential Other Stuff - Because I’m a huge Polock, pierogis, kielbasa, baked rice and apples, pan fried potatoes. Also, I don’t think a holiday (including Christmas) can go by without me making my salsa and guacamole.

  5. d - Okay. You know how to make cannolis? Srsly? And you’ve never told me this secret?? My face is sad. Also, I KNOW I have your recipes saved somewhere, but I have no idea where — will you resend so I can save them in T-bird? I can haz good cookiez?

Missy - Will you also resend recipes to my e-mail? I switched from Outlook to Thunderbird, and I can find NOTHING. :weeps copiously: Just send everything you find. I might not make it all this year, but I’m going to try switching it up a little, at least.

  6. You want the ones I have listed above or my whole recipebox again?

  7. Missy - Can I have the whole shebang? If it’s not handy, that’s cool. I can go a-Googling. I just trust your recipes more, even though you think mushrooms are food.

  8. No problem dude, I’ll send you everything I’ve got when I get back to the apartment tonight. I’ll zip it for you and send it because I love you. Oh and I’ll overlook the fact that y’all think veggies = BADDDDDD!

  9. Missy - YAYAY! Thank you! :))))

  10. I’m going to try these bar cookies today — Bleak House Bars, or something dumb-named like that, from a Diane Mott Davidson (is that right?) book. Anyway. The name sounds bad, but it’s a butter/pecan/cookie layer, a chocoloate/sweetened consensed milk layer, more butter/pecan/cookie, then raspberry, then cream cheese/cheesecake layer with chocolate chips/roasted pecans on top. Sound good? I’ll let you know how they turn out?

Second. Missy? I know we’re new acquaintances and all, but could you find enough love in your heart to send me your recipes, too? I love veggies. :::looks smugly at Steph:::: Oh. If you can, it’s LoopiRobbi@aol.com

  11. And what the hell happened to my spelling? Am I drinking this early in the morning? Chocoloate? For real?
