Missy's Ramblings

Okay guys, so y’all know I’ve been bumming about Alabama in general. Thats no secret I think. I’m feeling much like an Ina in a world of Paulas. So I decided that in an effort to not be such a crab ass about it I’d post my top 5ish things I love about living in Alabama. Honestly I wanted to do Top 10 but thinking of 5 will probably be a stretch but we’ll see when I get there. *ahem*

1. Sweet Tea. There is little on this earth as delicious to me as sweet tea. Not only that but the sheer accessibility of it down here is mind boggling. Not only do they have it as an option they expect that you’ll want it. “Can I get y’all some sweet tea?” Yes, please and thank you. For my whole life. Whoever thought to make really good iced tea and sweeten it so much that even Ged thinks its too sweet was, in fact, a genius. Hall of records for this person in my book.

2. Hushpuppies. Good lord. Who would think that little fried nuggets of spicy cornbread could be so absolutely delicious? A lot of times if I’m at a local mom and pop type restaurant I’ll ask to sub in hush puppies for french fries. Just as an FYI, my absolute favorite hush puppies so far? Served at Flounders in Pensacola Beach, FL. If you’re nearby go there. The hushpuppies are amazing but seriously - their po boys aren’t bad either. I need to figure out a really good recipe for these suckers when I get home.

3. The sheer proximity to the ocean. Unless its raining we go practically every weekend. The water is clear and warm. The sand is white and clean. It really might make this whole experience worthwhile. That is when I’m not being sunburned to a firey crisp. Pack a few sandwiches and a good book and you’ve got one of the best days I can think of. Well, as long as I don’t get saltwater up my nose.

4. Sonic. God how we’ll miss Sonic when we get home. Now for those of you up north who’ve never experienced the Sonic you’re really missing out. Actually scratch that, don’t go to Sonic. You will only crave it over and over and over. You’ll wake up in he middle of the night dreaming about one of their 168,000 drink options. Their cheese tots. Their fabulously cheap breakfast. Where else can you get a steak, egg and cheese breakfast burrito for $2.99. Now think of one that actually tastes good. Yeah. I may weep for Sonic when we leave.

5. Three words people. Bless ‘er heart. These three words allow you to talk the most ugly of trash about someone but still maintain that moral high ground. “Did you see Sheila’s daughter? Bless ‘er heart. She’s dumber than a bag ‘o hammers.”  Those three little words make it perfectly okay that you called this kid stupid.  From what I’ve seen you could say this to her own mother and she wouldn’t even bat an eyelash.  Well you did say bless ‘er heart…

6. The sheer proximity to friends and family that we usually don’t get to see very often.  We got to see D, Jennifer & Jim, Brad and Nicole.  We’re going to Jennifer’s for Thanksgiving and we’re stopping to see Steph.  Were we home we probably wouldn’t have had the time or have been in such close driving distance. Honestly, its been so nice being able to see everybody and they’ve helped to make the miserableness worthwhile.
