Okay, it’s taken me a long time, but I’ve finally learned that I don’t have to read books because I should. What I mean is that I treat some books like broccoli — it might be good for me, but it tastes like shit, so I’m not going to bother. Just because a fafillion critics say it’s awesome doesn’t mean it actually is awesome.
Apparently, I’ve joined a Book Club that believes that we should eat the damn broccoli, like it or not. This month’s book is Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. Now, it’s not a bad book, really. It’s got funny bits, and it’s not the most awful book I’ve ever read. In other words, it’s not broccoli. However, it isn’t a big piece of chocolate cake, either. Mmmm…chocolate cake…I digress. Well, this chick ain’t eatin’ that not-quite-broccoli.
When reading is a chore, not a pleasure, put the book down, people. Life is too short to waste on reading the things you think you should, rather than the things you like. Hell, that applies all across the board, I guess. Life is short — stop doing shit you don’t have to just because you think you should. Eat the chocolate cake.
That’s all.
